Prophetic stories have served to inspire, guide and strengthen people throughout history and in our current time. In 2007, a small group of Muslims hosted a zero-trash potluck iftar during the month of Ramadan. These individuals intended to raise awareness of global environmental issues within a Muslim community while hoping to create a language of Muslim-based environmentalism that would precipitate across communities. This group became Green Muslims.
Based out of DC, the executive director Sevim Kalyoncu works with a team of dedicated sisters and brothers to serve as a source in the Muslim community for spiritually-inspired environmental education, action, and reflection. They are engage locally while serving as a national resource. Below is a little bit of biography about her.
“Growing up in Alabama surrounded by woods and creeks, Sevim discovered at an early age that her most direct connection with God came through nature. To this day, she still finds peace in natural surroundings and holds a deep concern regarding humankind’s responsibility as vicegerent of the earth. She is involved with multiple local climate action groups and dedicated to helping educate youth about the importance of environmental awareness for spiritual, mental, and physical well-being. She holds a B.S. from Georgetown and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and has many years of nonprofit experience in Washington, DC, and the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also a professional writer/editor and yoga instructor and is currently training to be a master naturalist.”

For nearly one half a century acclaimed British photographer Peter Sanders has traveled the earth to capture images of the saints of Islam. In the traditional world, these people of purity, knowledge and illumination have been the role models, benchmarks and exemplars of what it is to be human. The goal of this spiritual tradition is nothing less than direct experience or ma’arifa (gnosis) of God’s presence. The fulfillment and embodiment of this tradition is the Friend or Intimate of God. This lengthy search has finally culminated in the publication entitled Meetings with Mountains, Encounters with the Saints and Sages of the Islamic World.
’Hearts Turn’ is a singular and gripping exploration of the act of 'tawba', a Qur’anic term commonly translated as repentance. In English, repentance is a forbidding word that suggests a puritanical finality. But in Arabic the term 'tawba' is dynamic, meaning to ‘turn’ or ‘return’. 'At-Tawwab' is one of the Names of God, the Oft-Returning or Ever-Relenting. It is an active constant, an ongoing, compassionate reality that renews every moment we are alive. The process of purification is a process of continuous turning.
In ‘Hearts Turn’ Michael Sugich, author of ‘Signs on the Horizons’, tells stories that are harrowing and hilarious, heartrending and bizarre, profane and transcendent, and altogether full of hope, showing how men and women from many parts of the world and many walks of life have turned themselves around and taken a fork in the road toward a higher reality.
