Tradition, Openings & The Modern Pen with Special Guest: Dr. Ali Hussain

Open Mic

In keeping with our theme of Opening for the year, and the tradition of sending prayers and praise on the Prophet, with increase focus during the month of Rabi al-Awal, we are hosting a special open mic event. This event will be a combination of a keynote by Dr. Ali Hussian and an open mic for our community. Penn students, alumni, staff, faculty and regular Muslim Life participants are invited to attend and to share something. Muslim devotional poetry, spoken word and music are all welcome, original compositions and favorites. Those wanting to share should register here as a presenter and let Chaplain Patty know the content and length of the presentation by Wednesday.

Keynote: Tradition, Openings and the Modern Pen

“Throughout history, Muslim teachers have spoken and written about the fath (spiritual opening). But is it possible to achieve such a state in our contemporary age? If so, what does a Muslim seeker’s vision look like in an age of technology and globalization? What importance does culture, the arts and media have in this process. Are they a hindrance or necessity?”

Join Dr. Ali Hussain as he journeys through the writings of Muslim polymaths Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and Muhyiddin Ibn al-‘Arabi and beckons these ancestors to help us, contemporary Muslims, traverse the complex spiritual landscape of our modern world.”
